Why do we like this?

I’m not one who is able to speak on the importance of unique lives peaking through the very dominant Western voice that permeates most of our collective media. I do, however, have a sneaking suspicion that it’s of utmost importance and that our small ears should make passageways for those outlying narratives.

We so often think that there is only one way to live life and it is as though we wander with blinkers on. Accessing the generous outpouring of an artist’s experience, shared through song, dance, art, and so on, is a precious gift that, if unwrapped, holds the potential to peel away the leather, allowing our gaze to expand.

Blick Bassy is a singer-songwriter from Cameroon whose artistry does just that. This song, “Woñi,” features on his album, 1958, released in 2019. Telling the story of his exile from his country, the search for his roots, his childhood, and love, the albumexpands the minds of its listener, exposing them to very real realities that often remain voiceless. Bassy dedicated this album to the memory of Ruben Um Nyobé whom he considers one of his political heroes.
