Why do we like this?

While Mindchatter’s original version of “Referees Don’t Fall in Love,” released in October 2020 as part of his album Imaginary Audience, was a beautifully melodic, echo-laden acoustic track that showcased Bryce Connolly’s exquisite voice and thoughtful lyrics, Anja Schneider’s remix adds a welcome dose of dreamy, groovy, tech-house electronica that turns the song on its head and warps the general soundscape so that it almost feels like a different song — one that’s just as good, if not better.

Schneider’s remix take’s Connolly’s effortless harmonic falsettos and makes them hazily ebb and flow around the periphery of your focus, following a winding roadmap smoothly laid out by woozy, zig-zagging synths, undulating percussive rhythms, and resonant bass.

Whereas the original track begins with a simple, pretty acoustic guitar arpeggio, the remix takes no prisoners by throwing us straight in the deep end with some slinky, funky bass grooves overlaid with enough reverb to create a spiraling auditory vortex. Combined with the floating quality of the synth-lines, this creates an almost esoteric feeling that lilts and grows throughout the track.

I’ve mentioned in some of my previous posts that I’m not usually one for remixes, but this one seriously impressed me. It’s distinctive and hypnotic and allows what was once a simple, moving, guitar-led song to transition into something glittering, bold, and untamed.
