Silk Chiffon (Ft. Phoebe Bridgers)
Sep 09, 2021
Why do we like this?
The track starts off with what sounds like the charmed theme song, before the acoustic guitar kicks in. Clearly synthetic drums, bright melodies, clanging indie guitars, fragmented keys all produce a song fit for a Disney channel movie with a queer twist.
Phoebe Bridgers’ verse allows use to hear the grammy-nominee try out a different vocal style while contributing a classic Bridgers ethereality. The trio recently signed to Bridgers’ record label, “Silk Chiffon” being their first original release since. So far the band has been characterized by their electro-pop sound, finding more mainstream success in the last 5 years or so.
The video for “Silk Chiffon” draws aesthetic and thematic inspiration from the cult classic “But I’m a Cheerleader” with soft pastels and longing gay glances. With this track MUNA has made an excellent contribution to the growing genre of sapphic 2000s pop, Chloe Moriondo being another notable figure of this genre with their recent record “Blood Bunny.” The song ultimately is a well-made and joyful sapphic bop that I think can easily fit onto countless playlists designed to encourage optimism.
