Why do we like this?

A pretty, acoustic guitar-led instrumental track with some interesting percussive samples and layered synths for diversity make RAC’s “Palavra” a truly unique offering. It’s simple, but therein lies its beauty. At just 2 minutes and 11 seconds, it’s also very short; I felt like I’d just started getting into it when it ended in what I found to be quite an abrupt manner.

Like a good dream, this melody-driven, indie-electronica track builds slowly and gently, incrementally increasing in mild complexity, and reaching its peak at around a minute in. Subsequently, it peters off again to begin how it started: an enjoyable, but not very gripping, acoustic guitar arpeggio.

On Twitter, RAC explains that “Palavra” means ‘word’ (interesting, given that there are none on the actual track) and that he used his childhood nylon guitar and an analog synthesizer to create what he terms “a really playful melody that doesn’t stay perfectly in key.”

Released on 26 March 2021 as part of RAC’s new EP, You, this is a single inspired by video game soundtracks, and in that respect, it’s quite nostalgic and fun to listen to.
