Why do we like this?
I tend not to enjoy overly experimental music. Though what that is, I’m not entirely sure. Is there a way to measure the level of experimentation in a creative endeavor? Perhaps someone, somewhere, could formulate something, but for this plain pleb (me), I stick with the more caveman-mentality of ‘I like’ or ‘I don’t like.’
This leads to a rather simple breakdown:
Experimental music — ‘I don’t like.’
Son Step’s “Hissing Sauna” — ‘I like.’
That “Hissing Sauna” is an experimental track has left me rather perplexed, as though the aforementioned caveman mentality has hit itself over the head with its well-worn club.
It is with thanks to Son Step, that I have had to evolve, realizing that I do indeed like experimental music, but only on the condition that it has been done right. And Son Step has done it so very right…so much so that I have laid down my club and began wielding a fork, I can also now harness fire to cook food. The evolution that takes place at the hands of a good song is a wild ride I tell you!
“Hissing Sauna” marks the second release from the upcoming EP, New Ears, created in collaboration with Cincinnati-based drummer and avid sonic experimenter, Ben Sloan (WHY?, The National, Naytronix.)
