Why do we like this?

A little nugget of dreamy bedroom pop from Amsterdam-based Mazey Haze, “Sad Lonely Groove” is exactly that: a sad, lonely, groove…but with psychedelic, lilting melodies and glittering synths to boot. Sonically, it’s like the musical equivalent of dancing around hazily in a field of flowers.

Her debut single is beautifully composed with impeccable instrumentation, and there’s an authentic expression in the lyricism and vocals that create a somewhat carefree feel, despite the name of the track. It encapsulates the ability to sit with one’s sadness and loneliness, to explore it, to share it openly, and the bravery inherent in that practice. In a statement, Mazey Haze explains the meaning behind the song:

“The song is about me feeling the lowest and loneliest I’ve ever felt in my life. I hadn’t built lots of friend relationships yet and I forced myself to be alone with myself. It’s about missing the guy I thought I was in love with. It’s a stream of thoughts that were circling around in my head all the time. It was the first time that I realized I wasn’t able to be happy by myself and was very dependent in the past relationship. Suddenly I had to meet and get to know myself, something I had never done before. When I wrote this song I was still running away from it all.”

It’s a pretty, somewhat retro, warm and emotive track, and makes feeling sad and lonely just that little bit easier.
