Small Space, Big Theme

A song created in lockdown culture makes for the ultimate amalgamation of a stress I lived through every day — nothings happening and it’s all going downhill.

So there was a huge call for good mental health in the time of lockdown — a somewhat need for everyone to just kinda relax and breathe and just know things are gonna be OK and yet, as all humans do, we panicked and of course for all the right reasons…bad things were happening.

“More Than This” takes that exact moment, the “nothing is happening and it all is kinda terrible” moment, and evolves it just a few steps into the future, into the moment of, ” I think it’s gonna be OK” and further into the ” just hold on baby” mindset. It succeeds in making you feel like there is a light.

A breath of fresh air amidst the chaos of quarantine-themed content in music. Aimés’ “More Than This” is an uplifting, folky pop song that guarantees a smile.

Why do we like this?

Disco Funk Olympics

Welcome to the disco-funk Olympics where it’s all about the movements, all about the feels.

POND has made themselves a staple in the disco-funk/electronic rock space and with “America’s Cup” they’ve just justified it all over again. There’s a bumping, racetrack-like beat that keeps traveling through your brain planting rhythms and moves without failure. If dance was an Olympic sport and you’d want an opening song, this would probably be it. It’s a beautiful homage to 80’s electro with a twist of modern ideals that leads to something wholly satisfying and undoubtedly cool.

I don’t always get caught up on funk rock songs as much as I should, but this song has definitely reminded me of why I should never let that genre go.

Why do we like this?

Flash “Pulp” Gordon

The band with possibly the best Power Rangers villain name has delivered a driving psychedelic rock anthem pulsing with pulpy inspiration.

“Pleura” is a song designed around its multiple levels of inspiration and it doesn’t shy away from it for a singular second. The slow-building drum tick starts it off with an immensely anticipative tension. The floaty wizard-like vocals are reminiscent of Norse chanting and the lyrics themselves are a collection of Pulpy references from necromancers to assimilations, it’s all in there.

The song isn’t high stakes all the time — there are some breaks, from softer moments to actual rhythmic silences. The song is almost at home as an intro to a superhero serial show introducing us to all the characters.

I miss my childhood.
