Why do we like this?

Take me All The Way Airways

Chet Faker’s “Feel Good” is a track built upon an almost infectious riff and it very successfully infects me with a feeling of joy.

With another immaculate release, Chet Faker makes obvious their ability to be an immovable object in the library of alt-rock and funk. The song title, “Feel Good,” has a lot to live up to, but as always this Chet Faker track doesn’t disappoint, not for a single second.

This is an entertainingly constructed track that will keep the good feelings flying. Enjoy!

Why do we like this?

Indulging in The Trip

A bopping, funky, and relatable human narrative leads to a grooving sound.

Max Pope delivers a narrative that is not only relatable but also so easy to listen to. You almost don’t even realize how much you are taking in when listening to “Automatic” because it’s so easygoing. You are, ultimately. on automatic when listening. “Automatic” is an entertainingly constructed sound that isn’t just easy, but also hyper-intelligent in its indulgence.

A drum track that is satisfying to the end, a smooth jazzy guitar layered with funk keeps it all going at a rhythmic pace. It takes you for a ride, and its a pretty good one!

Why do we like this?

Sorry, I Have To Go

A self-reflective piece on dissipating love that is tracked to a soft pop backdrop, feeding us a melancholic yet understanding moment of removal.

It kinda sucks when you realize something is over, we’ve all been there, but we’ve also all been to that place where we understand that is being over, is actually better for us. It’s a cathartic experience and “Heartbeat” encapsulates that in a soothing and healingly melancholic sound that bombards us with an amount of emotional understanding we were not ready for within the spectrum of listening to a soft-pop track.

The layers of the song can be peeled back to reveal a far more in-depth narrative about the slow destruction of one’s feelings towards someone, oneself, or something. The moment-to-moment dialogue is enough to keep you hooked on a floating feeling of fleeting emotional instability.

This song has a heart and a beating one at that, albeit a sad one.

Why do we like this?

Nina Simone’s New Age Years

The start of this song was a warping,time-traveling nostalgia trip, the whaling voice of the lead vocalist, Katy Sargent, threw me into a past of jazz and blues only to whiplash me back into a colorful, kaleidoscopic soundscape.

Elder Island has been a truly indie-electro trio, a rumor amongst the avid listeners of the joyful audio space that is dance electro. The band isn’t vocal in their need to be seen, they merely create music, drop music and watch the flock collect around their ever-changing sound, their new chant of dance and movement.

“Sacred” takes them into a completely unique forest of mashed genres, what starts off as a Nina Simone, James Bonde-esque intro theme switches into what can only be described as a flying funk dance piece that takes you up into a religious space of movement. In title, this song succeeds in making you feel like the moment-to-moment time spent listening to it is truly sacred — a feeling you won’t grab again with ease.

A really special experience for the followers of the dance anthem.

Why do we like this?

Slenderbodies has teamed up with Tim Atlas to bring us “Focus:” a hazy, smooth indie R&B track with elements of funk, pop, and hip hop that’s entrancing in all the right ways. Released on March 11th, 2021, this single follows Slenderbodies’ previous collab with Australian band Crooked Colours, and is the perfect mix of laidback, sensual and melodic.

Speaking about the track in a statement, Slenderbodies said:

“Focus” was written at the beginning of quarantine. When we were catching up with Tim at the start of the session, he mentioned he’d taken a bit of a break from writing recently because the state of the world had been so chaotic that it was difficult to create. We generalized that story to the concept for ‘focus’ and wrote it about how when we are settling into a task, sometimes the world, friends or responsibilities can take us out of the creative space we try to keep in our heads.”

The artists collaborated virtually, each in their own homes, each deep in the void of quarantine. It always astounds me, the creativity that 2020 was able to produce despite its chaos, fear and uncertainty. I myself spent most of it sat on the couch in yesterday’s track pants, elbow deep in a bag of Doritos and soul-deep in a pit of anxiety, wiling away the time by appreciating the musical endeavours of others more productive than I. I suppose, in a way, I was somewhat productive, as I was part of the community that was able to give deeply enjoyable offerings like “Focus” a welcome place to land. It’s all about that balance, right?
