Why do we like this?
You know that feeling of falling in love with someone new? The one where you’re head over heels, every thought revolves around them, and you can barely contain all your excitement, affection, and joy? Where you notice all the little things about them that make them special, like the perfect curve of their nose, or the light smattering of tiny freckles on their shoulders, or the way their whole face lights up when they laugh? How you know you’d be perfectly happy just to be curled up in bed all day holding them close without doing a damn thing, how time seems to stand completely still when you kiss them, and how they make you want to be the best version of yourself? Yeah? That feeling. That’s what this track embodies. “Loverboy” is a modern indie-rock love song, and the easy-to-follow lyrics, highly danceable beat, and some catchy-as-hell keyboard and synth riffs ensure that while this track is somewhat of a cliché, it’s also immensely enjoyable.
The lyrics convey the gratitude of finding love after experiencing hardship, loss and pain, and how healing it can be to finally feel safe to open up and be vulnerable again with someone you trust. They also encompass the sweetness and romanticism of new love in the most adorable way:
“I like chocolate and roses
Breakfast in bed and polaroid poses
I like holding you closely
Tracing with fingers your lips and your nose ring
Sometimes I think I went soft
Sad boy got played out cut up and ripped off
Begging God for a lift up
Like begging for time from a wristwatch
Opening up after deafening loss
It’s definitely hard
Let me be happy, I’ve carried my cross”
-Sir Sly, Loverboy
“Loverboy” is off Sir Sly’s third album, The Rise and Fall of Loverboy, due out April 23rd, 2021. A little late for Valentine’s Day, but a most lovely, loving offering nonetheless. Besides, every day is like Valentine’s Day when you’re deeply in love, and “Loverboy” encapsulates that perfectly.
