Why do we like this?

A Quiet Choir / an Angsty Wail

Very few songs out there really advocate for, and explain, anxiety in a comprehensible and beautiful way.

What Sufjan Stevens has done with “Tell Me You Love Me” is something quite special. Making use of a crescendoing vocal track that overlays itself continuously with building vocals and instruments, they create an indie rock track that feels like a Christopher Nolan soundtrack.

What this song does so amazingly, for me, is that it touches on that melancholic detachment that comes with anxiety when asking people to just be present, whether it be a loved one, a friend, or a family member.

Its flowing vocals create a wail and cry for help that builds into one of my favorite moments of music in 2021 so far!

Why do we like this?

A Sparrow’s Bender Regret

I only recently discovered Tōth and The first thing that came to mind when I listened to their music was the birdlike aesthetic of his movements, vocals, and general music video/stage persona.

Turnaround takes this young chirping artist’s sound — his floating vocals, breezy storytelling, light acoustic orchestrations — and tilts them just a little off-kilter. The narrative of a regretful bender weaves in and out of vignettes in lyrics as the character comprehends the events of their time on an illicit substance.

It’s a soft pop vocal track with melancholic orchestration, and migrational narrative delivers making for an enticing bop that won’t be leaving my playlist anytime soon.
