Why do we like this?

New York Romantic

What starts as a song that would be easy to listen to, easy to understand, and easy to digest evolves into something a little bit more enthralling.

This song is an earworm because it’s an easy listen. It’s a beer compared to a whiskey, but a very good beer. The narrative mostly revolves around the romance of a New York relationship and makes for a simple concept, and yet, this song is so entertaining because of that! It’s so relatable that almost any person could find joy in its youthful narrative and almost characteristically naive lead-vocal about romance.

“FAIY” is a well constructed and endlessly entertaining dive into the world of youthful romance and the New York lifestyle.

Why do we like this?

Don’t let the slow start of this one phase you. At 0:38 it opens up into a beautiful jazzy future soul song that would easily confuse the casual listener for a Tom Misch or FKJ original.

CALUNDÉ is from The Netherlands. And is as is often the case with talent like this, he’s young: a fledgling at only 20-years-old. As if I wasn’t feeling older already, knowing that someone roughly half my age can pull off a song like this is, well, humbling. I clearly have to step my game up if I’m ever going to graduate from the acoustic guitar.

Anywho, hope you enjoy “Compromise.”

Why do we like this?

More often than not, new singles by rocomoco get added to my jazzy chill beats playlist. This time, though, he’s managed to release a song that resonated with me enough to feature it on the homepage.

The whole “study beats” genre is becoming more saturated by the day. We probably get sent ~20 songs in the genre on a daily basis, so it’s quite hard to stand out. More often than not the defining factor comes down to the melody – and a little of variation.

Here’s rocomoco’s take on the song:

The kalimba, as we know it, is a simple diatonic instrument you can instantly play with. It has a cosy, innocent vibe that connects instantly. We have rebuilt the kalimba in a sampler to add our electronic arsenal of lofi EFX. We wanted to automize, chop, pitch, bend, delay and filter the kalimba to its extends without ending up in a loose experimental space. Out came the very chilled tune „colimba“.

Bottom line: nifty stuff.

Why do we like this?

Ahead of his new album, Music, Benny Sings has released his new single “Here It Comes.” The single, released with an animated music video, is about growing up and feeling like the world is at your feet, ready for the taking. In a statement, Benny says:

“The lyrics are about me as a young boy, living on the streets in Dordrecht [a city in the Netherlands] with my skate crew, and feeling life presenting itself, and feeling excited about it. A time full of hope and bravado. My dad used to call us ‘Little Giants’.”

“Here it Comes” is a breath of fresh air in a world where music is often unnecessarily complicated and multi-layered. It’s composed of chill, lo-fi hip hop beats replete with a walking drumbeat, dreamy keys, and groovy synths. The lyrics are straightforward, honest and open, and are complemented perfectly by Benny’s signature brand of quirky soul. The song is a slow-moving, easy listening soundtrack to a sun-filled weekend.

Music is out April 9th, and features collaborations from the likes of Emily King, KYLE, Mac Demarco, Cautious Clay, and Tom Misch.
